![]() Mental note: add staying at Heceta Lighthouse Bed and Breakfast to Bucket List.Īfter gazing enviously over the white picket fence a little longer, Herb nudged me along to the lighthouse, where we took many photos of it and the beautiful headlands. This was not to be, however, as I soon learned that the Keeper’s Quarters is a bed and breakfast, and these lucky people were paying customers. I love old houses and their porches and immediately wanted to figure out how I could be on it too. We first came to the Lighthouse Keeper’s Quarters, a lovely white house, with a traditional red roof, and people happily mingling on the beautiful old porch that extended the length of the house. We took the short trail up the western end of the headland towards the lighthouse. The lighthouse sits 200 feet above the ocean, perched on the western end of beautiful 1,000-foot high Heceta Head. It was easy to see why this is the most photographed lighthouse on the Oregon Coast. Instead we pulled into the originally planned parking lot for the trail up to the lighthouse. There is actually a viewpoint at Milepost 179, where the iconic shots of this lighthouse are taken, but we kind of missed that. The trail is open year-round and is beautiful to visit anytime. This is a popular trail for birding and walking, but you can still enjoy some solitude during quieter times of day. Drive or ride your bike up to Yachats, Oregon where you will find cute bakeries, plenty of beaches and delicious clam chowder. Generally considered an easy route, it takes an average of 7 min to complete.Take the 195B Santa Clara Florence exit just North of Eugene. Plus, you can hike from the campground to other sites such as the historic Heceta Head Lighthouse. South from Portland or North from the California border. A half-mile hike to the beach, private camping spots with plenty of trees, and hot showers! An easy option after a long day’s drive if you’d rather not look for a boondocking spot, which can sometimes be tough to find right near the beach. Just show up and see what they have available. While having reservations can be nice on the coast, we found that many state parks offer one-night options for a last minute campsite if you didn’t plan ahead. Long stretches of untouched beaches, evergreen forests that go right down to meet the ocean, and quirky little towns abound in this region of the Oregon coast. We have found the Central Oregon coast to be quieter than areas like Lincoln City, Newport or Cannon Beach. When the hotter temps hit us in Boise, we hit the road! Cooler temps and sunny weather on the Oregon coast this time of year make for the perfect van get away. Heceta Head Lighthouse stands 1,000 feet tall and was first illuminated in 1894.
